George W. Bush’s daughter has come out in support of marriage equality, joining her mother who last year came out in favour of the cause.

Barbara Bush has joined the Human Rights Campaign for gay marriage, saying in a short video “I am Barbara Bush, and I am a New Yorker for marriage equality.”

“New York is about fairness and equality. And everyone should have the right to marry the person that they love.”

Barbara joins her mother Laura who came out last year in support of gay marriage.

“When couples are committed to each other and love each other, they ought to have the same sort of rights that everyone has,” Barbara told CNN. She also said abortion should remain legal.

Former president Bush endorsed a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage in 2004, and a number of states followed suit in enacting their own bans during presidential election that year.

Bush said: “The union of a man and a woman is the most enduring human institution, honoured and encouraged in all cultures and by every religious faith.

“Marriage cannot be severed from its cultural, religious and natural roots without weakening the good influence of society.”

Barbara and Laura Bush join a series of daughters and wives of prominent politicians in the US who support gay marriage while their fathers or husbands have not.

Both wives and the children of Democrats John Kerry and John Edwards have all come out in support of gay marriage while the two men say they support civil unions. The wife of republican senator John McCain also supports gay marriage while her husband remains vehemently opposed to equal marriage.
