A trans woman in Lincoln is suing her former employer for what she insists is discrimination after she was fired for wearing women’s clothing, a mandatory step many must take before completing their transition.
Rachel Millington, 24, a support worker for adults with learning disabilities, says once she began wearing women’s clothing to work, she was sacked.
She has already begun living as a woman now for a year and plans to undergo a full transition and have gender reassignment surgery.
Millington claims that once she started showing up to work dressed as a women, she was let go and says she knows of no other reason why her contract was terminated. She showed up to work last September after changing her name from Andrew.
Speaking to the Lincolnshire Echo, Millington said she will seek damages from her company next month.
"This is the longest time I've been out of work and I don't want to be signing on.
"I don't think people are aware that there are people like me out there and that I'm not hurting anyone."
The company has thus far not spoken to the media ahead of the tribunal.
