West Sussex Council First County Council outside London to Employ Stonewall Employee

August 23, 2010

West Sussex has chosen to employ a Stonewall employee, to promote equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in the workplace.

Dave Small, the Regional Workplace Associate, is to be employed by the West Sussex County Council, on a trial basis, the first time a Stonewall employee is to be employed by a council outside of London.

The county council, which is known as gay friendly employer and which has made the Stonewall Diversity Champion list on numerous occasions, has decided to further improve its credentials as a gay friendly employer.

The new position aims to build a strong network of contacts within the West Sussex region, with recruitment of more employers within the region to the Stonewall Diversity Champions programme also hoped for during the six-month trial period.

Dave Small said: “It has regional benefits being in Chichester, as I can attend forums in the county and the surrounding area, as well as speak to organisations that work, or want to work with us on a more local, face-to-face basis.”

Louise Goldsmith, Leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “We are delighted that Stonewall has chosen us to host Dave in the charity’s first efforts to station employees outside of London.

“I hope that having Dave here will give people in West Sussex and the surrounding area, the chance to find out more about what Stonewall and the County Council both have to offer for the lesbian, gay and bi-sexual community.

“We look forward to working with Stonewall more closely.”
