MTV Tops Networks as Most LGBT-Friendly
July 27, 2010
A US-based gay rights media watchdog rated MTV as the most gay-friendly TV network.
MTV ranked best for quantity, quality, and diversity of LGBT depictions in the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation’s fourth Network Responsibility Index.

"It is with great pride that GLAAD honours MTV with our highest mark of excellence in recognition of the network’s commitment to fair and accurate representation of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community,” said GLAAD president Jarrett Barrios.
“From their inception, MTV programmes like The Real World and America’s Best Dance Crew have offered richly diverse portrayals of gay and transgender people that help Americans better understand and accept our community.”
The broadcast network the CW has 35 per cent of its primetime television programming considered LGBT friendly. The CW carries 90210 and the hugely popular Gossip Girl.
The report considered some Fox content to be “defamatory” but nonetheless gave the network a high score for showcasing LGBT characters in 30 per cent of its content.
ABC had 26 per cent and was given a ‘good’ rating; NBC was considered ‘adequate’ at 13 per cent. CBS failed, according to GLAAD, for carrying only seven per cent gay-friendly content.
The GLAAD reviewers watched close to 5,000 hours of primetime programming for its report.
