Racy Ads by Tories Revealed

July 20, 2010

The Sunday Times has revealed that the Conservatives created a series of racy ads during the election, but were never shown.

One such ad depicts two gay men showering together and “coming out” as Tory.

A second ad, making reference to teenage pregnancy, shows a girl who says to her father I am three months Conservative." Her father blames the girl’s boyfriend for converting her.

There’s been wide speculation as to the costs of the ads, ranging from the Sunday Times claim of £100,000 to a claim by the Spectator's Fraser Nelson at £500,000.

Speaking to the Sunday Times, a Conservative Party insider said: "The ads are all very clever and much more imaginative and funnier than anything that they put out during the election campaign.

"They were designed to appeal to voters who would not have thought of backing the Tories in the past. However, the risk with these ads was that they might have alienated more traditional core supporters."

A spokesperson for the party claimed the ads were not used simply because they did not make the cutting board.

"At any one time there are always various ideas at different stages of development on the table, many of which don’t end up being used."
