Boris Johnson Supports Gay Marriage
July 06, 2010
London Mayor Boris Johnson has said he supports gay marriage.

Speaking to Pinknews.co.uk, he said he would like to rerun for the post so he could be mayor for Worldpride in 2012 when London hosts the global event.
Joining members of the Gay Liberation Front to begin the parade, Johnson said: “If the Conservatives and Liberals can get together in a national coalition and settle their differences, I don't see why you can't have gay marriage.”
Peter Tatchell was also present at the parade, carrying a banner which read, “David and Sam Cameron can Marry – Gays Can’t. End the Ban on Gay Marriage”.
When the mayor saw Tatchell holding the placard, he made his response clear.
“There you are – the mayor supports gay marriage," said Tatchell.
“Pride shows that London is the most generous, open, diverse city, whatever your background,” said Johnson.
PinkNews.co.uk, Tatchell said: "I'm very pleased. He took one look at it and said 'why not?'
"I'm sure his support will add to the pressure to marriage equality."
He added: "Tory minders tried to push me out of the way but I caught his eye and showed him the placard and he said 'come over'."
Johnson did not always support marriage equality. In the past, he said marriage "can only ever be a ludicrous parody of the real thing."
With his support, Johnson becomes the highest ranking official to support same-sex marriage.
