Lesbian Couple Ties the Knot in Prison

February 26, 2010

Marriage in the UK, it seems, has no physical limitations.

A lesbian couple in prison – one for drug dealing, the other for stabbing to death a father of two – has tied the knot in prison, effectively entering a civil partnership.

The ceremony took place earlier this month, according to The Sun. The couple wore their own clothes and partied in celebration with other inmates afterward. The pair paid £250 for the ceremony in Send Prison in Surrey.

Sara Crane was sentenced to life in 2003 for murder and Joanne Davies is serving two and a half years for the intent to supply drugs. Both are 31.

"It was the perfect day," Crane said to an inmate.

The two are assigned separate cells but are permitted to spend two hours a day together.

Gay couples in prison are allowed to enter civil partnerships and prison governors must heed such requests.

A Ministry of Justice spokesman said: "We cannot comment on individual offenders held in custody at HMP Send.

"Offenders are entitled to apply to the Governor to register a civil partnership in prison under the Civil Partnership Act 2004, so long as certain criteria defined under the Act are met."
