Yorkshire to be left feeling Tickled Pink

February 26, 2010

BRITAIN’S first paid-for gay wedding magazine will launch into Yorkshire on Monday (March 1).

Britain's First Paid-For Gay Magazine

Tickled Pink – backed by gay-friendly businesses in the region – is designed and written to make getting married easier for gay couples.

Editor Sue Briggs came up with the idea as she organised her own civil partnership to barrister Caroline Harris and encountered some businesses along the way that were not interested in her custom.

“Getting married is a big step for anyone, but especially for gay couples,” said Sue.

“There were some wedding suppliers that didn’t want to deal with me and it is not nice to know people won’t take your money off you because of your sexuality. Hopefully Tickled Pink will help other gay couples avoid the kind of experience that we went through as it only includes gay-friendly businesses.”

Tickled Pink includes contributions from gay celebrities including jazz singer Clare Teal, from Kildwick in Yorkshire, and comedienne Sandi Toksvig.

Sue also saw contributions from non-celebrities as crucial to the magazine’s success. The story of a father coming to terms with his daughter’s sexuality is moving and reassuring to anyone living in fear of their parents’ reaction to their ‘big news’.

Tickled Pink was first launched in the North West with the support of Profile Communication, a marketing company owned by Sue’s former colleague Nicola Dufty.

Yorkshire was next on the list due to Hebden Bridge reportedly being the lesbian capital of Britain.

But the annual magazine could never have been published if it was not for the support of dozens of gay-friendly businesses in Yorkshire.

“We found many wedding suppliers in the area who were keen to show their support to the gay community and, for that, we are really grateful,” said Sue, 44.

“Hopefully the magazine will be of interest to gay people whether they are getting married or not. For those couples who use it to plan their wedding we wish them well on their big day.”

Tickled Pink will be available in independent book stores – priced £3.50 – and through the website tickledpinkmagazine.co.uk
