Mark Feehily Announces Engagement on Twitter

Westlife’s Mark Feehily has announced his engagement to long-time boyfriend Kevin McDaid via Twitter.

The duo got engaged on what was their fifth anniversary and have thus far not revealed a date for their civil partnership ceremony.

The singer had kept his sexual orientation a secret up until 2005 when he began dating McDaid. In August that year the couple came out and announced their relationship. Feehily came out to the Sun newspaper while dating McDaid, but before then referred to McDaid as a mere “companion.”

Feehily praised Stephen Gately for coming out as early as he had in 1999. "Stephen was extremely brave, “he said. “He was the first member of a boyband to come out, and, in hindsight, it helped me and probably lots of other gay lads to understand their sexuality and come out.
 

"Every time a celebrity who is admired by millions of people comes out, it's one more blow to any negative stereotype out there."
 

Westlife has seen enormous success over the years becoming the only group in UK history to have their first seven singles top the UK charts. The band has sold over 45 million records worldwide. McDaid was a member of the now defunct boyband V.
