Exeter LGBT Pride is Coming Out!

March 27, 2010

Preparations are well under way for Exeter’s second pride event, one of the area’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) celebrations.

Exeter Pride committee has been working towards making Exeter LGBT Pride 2010 even bigger and better than 2009's History Pride event. This year’s pride will take place on Saturday, March 27, with most events at the Phoenix Arts Centre and at venues in Gandy Street.

There will be a rainbow flag parade through the city centre, fun events, music, stalls and a discussion with a panel of invited guests on a range of topics.

There will be a women’s space offering workshops and information, a men's networking space, a youth space, chill-out cafe and speed dating! Admission to the family-friendly event, which will run from 11am to 4pm, will be free of charge.

It is expected to attract hundreds of people to the city, not just from around the South West, but nationwide, and not just lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans.

Exeter Pride committee member Alan Quick said: “Exeter Pride is coming out this year!

“To kick things off it will be taking to the streets with the biggest rainbow flag parade the city has ever seen.

“The parade will move off at 11am so we want everyone who wants to take part to congregate from 10.30am at the St Sidwell’s Centre on Sidwell Street.

“The parade, and the 50 metre long rainbow flag, will then move down Exeter High Street and along part of Queen Street before going to the Phoenix Arts Centre.

“There will be lots for people to see and do right through until 4pm. It should be a really fun day.

“It is going to be a terrific pride and we hope everybody comes along, not just members of the LGBT community.

“The event would not be possible without a lot of work by many volunteers and financial backing from sponsors. We would like to thank them all.”

To date, a number of fundraising events have been held including a disco at Vaults, an LGBT-friendly bar in Gandy Street, which raised more than £150 towards the Pride event.

A fundraising Valentine’s disco, from 8pm to 3am, will be held at the Vaults on Saturday, February 13.

Prior to this, on Saturday, February 6, from 11am to 3pm, a “gay” jumble sale will be held at the St Sidwell’s Centre.

At the jumble sale will be the judging of entries in a cake making competition entitled “The Cake Factor”.

Those attending are invited to bring a home-made, LGBT themed decorated cake.
