Adam Lambert, the gay American Idol singer has stirred up some controversy in the US when he kissed another male musician during the debut of his latest single For Your Entertainment.
The gay kiss and simulated sex act on stage during the American Music Awards has seen 1500 complaints by viewers, not such a high number considering the estimated 14.2million estimated viewers.
The openly gay singer, the following morning in an interview with the CBS Early Show, said: "I think that if it had been a female pop performer doing the moves that were on the stage, I don't think there would be nearly as much of an outrage at all. Like I said, there were other performers doing risqué things. I think it's because I'm a gay male, and people haven't seen that before."
He added: "I had fun, my dancers had fun, and the audience that was in the Nokia had fun. Anybody else who was watching it and enjoying it, thank you for being entertained."
Gay magazine Advocate’s Art Director, Jeremy Kinser weighed in and said: "I think there's obviously a double standard when it comes to gay male entertainers,"
"It's ridiculous they can show two women but can't show two men. I think it makes them look kind of silly. That's what's so ironic: they decided to put him on after 'Good Morning America' canceled him, and they seem really hypocritical to blur the moment that has everybody talking."
CBS has defended its decision, and released the following statement:
"We gave this some real thought. The Madonna image is very familiar and has appeared countless times including many times on morning television. The Adam Lambert image is a subject of great current controversy, has not been nearly as widely disseminated, and for all we know, may still lead to legal consequences."
