Vatican Rejects French Ambassador Because He's Gay

Friday 3rd October 2008

Recent reports have revealed that the Vatican used its power to block the appointment of a French diplomat because he was gay.

France has recently been in the process of choosing its next envoy to the Vatican. President Sarkozy had originally decided upon diplomat Jean-Loup Kuhn-Delforge.

Kuhn-Delforge is a long-time diplomat who is highly respected in France. He previously served as ambassador to Bulgaria and as head of the Consular Affairs Directorate.

Despite his professional qualifications, the Vatican rejected Kuhn-Delforge’s appointment. Kuhn-Delforge is gay and living in a civil partnership.

The Vatican said that it rejected Kuhn-Delforge because he did not conform to Catholic Morality. A similar explanation was used when the country rejected an Argentine ambassador because he was divorced, a situation that repeated itself in France earlier this year.

The Catholic Church is staunchly against divorce and gay rights. They are one of the leading supporters of Proposition 8 in California, a measure that would define marriage as only between a man and a woman.

Following the rejection of Kuhn-Delforge, Stanislas Lefebvre de Laboulaye, a former French ambassador in Russia, will become the newest envoy to the Vatican.
