Thursday 2nd October 2008

Police are investigating a Canadian politician for hate crimes after he told a group of high school students that gay men and women should be executed.

David Popescu is an independent federal candidate who was taking part in a candidate’s debate at the Sudbury Secondary Arts Magnet School in northern Ontario when a student asked about his position on gay marriage.

Popescu responded that "homosexuals should be executed," according to Canada.com.  The students responded negatively to his comment. Popescu was booed and students called for him to be cut off.

Shortly after that, police received an official complaint about Popescu. They immediately opened a hate crime investigation on the 61-year old independent candidate.

Popescu has remained firm on his pro-genocide stance. The candidate said his views were based on the Bible. In an interview with the Sudbury Star, he said: "A young man asked me what I think of homosexual marriages and I said I think homosexuals should be executed. My whole reason for running is the Bible and the Bible couldn't be more clear on that point."

He also blamed environmental problems in Canada and the current poor economy on “wickedness” in society.

Local police constable Bert Lapalme said that Popescu is well-known in the area for his sometimes inflammatory views. He told Canada.com: "The people that have dealt or know him are aware that he is known for speaking his mind and he has his own values and is not shy on sharing what he believes in and that is common knowledge in our area."

Lapalme also said that the local police will send their findings on the subject to a local prosecutor, who will decide whether or not to file hate crime charges. Lapalme told Canada.com: "Our criminal investigation division will do the investigation, will talk to witnesses and get statements from people at the debate."

It is unlikely that Popescu will be elected in the upcoming election if previous results are an indication. In last year’s Ontario election he received just 124 votes.
