Westboro Baptist Church Attacks Woman Dying of Cancer, Calls Edwards a 'Fag Enabler'

Tuesday 19th August 2008

Fred Phelps’ Westboro Baptist Church has joined the ranks of those condemning former North Carolina Senator and Vice-Presidential candidate Jonathan Edwards this week.

A Westboro Baptist Church picket of a soldier's funeral in 2005.

But while the media and moral groups line up to condemn Edwards for sleeping with an employee, WBC ignores the affair to concentrate on Edwards’ acts as a "fag enabler".

Perhaps it’s to be expected from the Topeka, Kansas based WBC. The church, which runs the website GodHatesFags, is utterly obsessed with homosexuality. They gained infamy, and more recently a multi-million dollar fine, for picketing the funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq. They say the soldiers’ deaths are God’s punishment for America’s alleged tolerance of homosexuality.

Edwards, who recently admitted to engaging in an affair with campaign videographer Rielle Hunter while his wife was in remission from cancer, provoked the ire of WBC because of his opposition to the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy and his condemnation of WBC. WBC responded by branding Edwards a “fag enabler” and claiming that the teachings he opposes are “God’s holy truth about fags”.

Not content to attack Mr. Edwards, the group also made sure that it told a dying woman she would soon be in hell.

Elizabeth Edwards, who divorced Jonathan Edwards after the affair, recently announced that she has terminal breast cancer. The WBC decided now was the perfect time to condemn her work as a lawyer and judge, branding her a "fornicator-enabler" and blasphemer. They even hope to deny her peace in death, promising to picket her funeral.

A WBC statement condemned the Edwards life in general, saying: "You will stand alone - naked and alone - for your Final Judgment, before that holy God in whose face you regularly spit. Meanwhile, WBC will picket your funerals, which, especially in the case of Elizabeth, if she is telling the truth about her breast cancer, might not be too far off."

Westboro Baptist Church has once again shown the world its true colors. One can only hope that last year’s $11 million judgment against the church, the result of a lawsuit filed by the father of a Marine whose funeral was picketed, is the first of many.
