Corporate Social Responsibility: Five Companies That Help Bring About Change

Tuesday 22nd July 2008

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is becoming a larger and lmore important role as more businesses involve themselves in the day-to-day goings about of our governments and conglomerated companies reach out for new consumers in different markets.  There is much to be said for ‘voting with your wallet’ in this age, and, if that’s the case, these five companies are five you definitely want to vote for.

1. Sky
We understand how you may find yourself incredulous upon reading that part of Rupert Murdoch’s behemoth is considered one of the most responsible corporate entities on the planet.  And of course, they have miles to go—but they’ve pioneered running a carbon-neutral business (remember the cat singing “Joy to the World?”), an enviable goal for all modern businesses.

2. McDonalds
McDonald’s is as unlikely as selection for a CSR example as Sky would seem to be—until you compare them to their peers in the U.S.  Ford, HP, and Microsoft have all caved under pressure from groups in the American south that shield their homophobia with religion, but McDonalds, despite being subjected to the same boycotts, has chosen to remain standing behind their decision to back homosexual marriage.

3. Absolut
Absolut, in addition to taking care of their LBGT employees as well as any company in the world, has learned how to market to the powerful minority and stand up for gay rights at the same time—they’ve produced over 30,000 “Absolut Colors” bottles of their vodka this year, a special edition bottle featuring a rainbow design, and are using the opportunity to spread information on the history of the 30-year old gay pride symbol.

4. British Council
The British Council, which is entrusted with promoting British education and commerce abroad, is annually one of the best places for gay employees to work.   As one might expect from a business that is the face of an entire nation abroad, the British Council invites those concerned to submit their opinions on the topic for the constantly-revised statements on culture, values, and community involvement.

5. Starbucks
Starbucks, in addition to selling their Ethos water, and paying a living wage, is best known in the U.S. for offering health insurance to part-time employees.  While this is not necessary in the U.K. thanks to NHS, they’ve become an important stopgap in the American healthcare system, as many companies don’t offer insurance to their full-time employees, much less those working 20 hours a week.
