Christians: Help! The Gays Are Persecuting Us!

Thursday 10th July 2008

I've always struggled to understand the mindset of those opposed to gay marriage rights on religious grounds (which I'm quite sure is all opposed whether they realize it or not), but thanks to a new column in a publication called "The Christian Post" I have some insight:  they're going to get persecuted.

OF COURSE!  That makes it so much easier.  Never mind that Christianity is one of the largest, and certainly the most powerful, religions in the modern world, or that they have quite a bit of history of persecution themselves (See:  American Slavery and White Supremacy, Inquisition, Crusades).  They're going to get run off the corner of the map by gay marriage, just like the Romans almost did to them some 2000 years ago.  Let's take a look:

"In Massachusetts, where judges imposed gay marriage a few years ago, Catholic Charities was ordered to accept homosexual couples as candidates for adoption. Rather than comply with an order that would be harmful to children, Catholic Charities closed down its adoption program."

These arguments seem to get so old that they're tired before I even utter them:  harmful to children how?  In what way are gay couples less suited to raise children than straight couples?  The research simply doesn't bear that out, but then again, perhaps the social scientists are persecuting you as well.  It's a conspiracy.  The whole article is filled with this screed--gays are using the state to IMPOSE their lifestyle on us! For shame!

Clearly, they've forgotten what real persecution looks like.

Or maybe they want to believe that they're being martyred to jungle cats as well?

Well.  Rawr.
