Pinke Goes to Brighton for Stonewall Equality Walk

Tuesday 6th May 2008

More than 300 people, including a couple of Pinke.biz representatives, visited Brighton on Sunday May 4, 2008, raising around £32,000 for gay friendly charity Stonewall’s work in the process.

Walkers gather at Brighton's Royal Pavilion Gardens before the event.

The people were there for the 5th annual Brighton Equality Walk, organized by Stonewall to gather funds and support for LGBT rights.

The walk, sponsored by American Express, went off without a hitch on the warm bank holiday weekend. Hosts Dicky and Dolly of GaydarRadio and comedian Amy Lame helped kick off the 10k walk in Brighton’s Royal Pavilions Gardens.

Participants stroll down Brighton's famous seafront.

The walkers, a diverse mixture of the LGBT community and supporters, walked along Brighton’s famed beach front and through its equally well-known gay district before ending at popular gay and lesbian bar Legends for a champagne party.

Stonewall will receive approximately £32,000 in funds raised by walkers and corporate sponsors, which will be used to help end anti-gay bullying and violence.

Pinke editor Robert Knox makes it to the finish line at Legends.

The after-walk party was highlighted by champagne and a raffle, as well as Stonewall chief executive Ben Summerskill’s speech.

Summerskill told the assembled crowd: "In the twenty years since Section 28, designed to demonise and stigmatise every single of us, homophobic bullying was fostered in our schools. So much has changed in those twenty years that we can be optimistic.

"Millions of lesbian and gay people have a voice, for the first time in history they have a platform from which their voice can be heard.”
