The Pride swept up the coveted Gscene Community Award at the March 23 ceremony held in the Brighton Metropole Hotel. The Golden Handbag Awards have been described as Brighton’s “Gay Oscars”, and were well attended by the glitterati of Brighton’s scene.
Judith Manson and Paul Smith of Pride in Brighton & Hove were handed the Gscene award, the ceremony’s final presentation, in recognition of the work of the volunteers and trustees of Pride. One man called the Pride “the best pride in the country”.
Smith is a member of the volunteer board, and Manson is Pride’s fundraising and communications director. Both expressed their delight over the award. Manson said: ‘This was a complete surprise; we are thrilled to receive such a prestigious community award. It’s wonderful to have the hard work of the volunteers and trustees recognised; and to hear that our efforts in recent months to work more closely with the local community is paying off’
Pride has recently been focusing on community involvement. On April 1, they held a “Get Involved” evening to help showcase the ways people could get involved in Pride celebrations over the summer. The evening was a major success, with dozens of attendees coming up with loads of great ideas.
