Almost everyone agrees that London is currently the “capital of the world”- sorry, New York.

Naturally, the world’s capital is home to a thriving gay and lesbian scene. Like every other community, the gay and lesbian community puts on events throughout the year.

Without further ado, here are the top 4 biggest gay and lesbian events in London.

4. Stonewall Awards (Late 2008. Specific date TBA)

Held towards the end of every year, (last year’s awards took place on November 1 at the Victoria and Albert Museum) the Stonewall Awards are the Oscars of the UK’s gay and lesbian scene. Celebrating people and institutions that help better the lives of the UK’s gays and lesbians, this glamorous event is not to be missed.

3. International Gay and Lesbian Football Association World Championships (24-30 August, 2008)

London hosts the “World Cup” of gay and lesbian football this year with the IGLFA World Championships at Regents Park. The event is designed to promote football as an activity for all regardless of sexuality, free from discrimination or judgment. The tournament will feature two men’s divisions and two women’s divisions fighting for a world championship title. The final for the men and women’s first divisions will be played in Leyton Orient FC’s Matchroom Stadium.

2. The London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival (27 March-10 April, 2008)

Held in the beginning of every year, the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival showcases the best in gay and lesbian cinema from around the world. A mix of documentaries, indie flicks and the occasional Hollywood fare, the festival is sure to appeal to film lovers of every stripe.

1. Pride London  (5 July, 2008)



You couldn’t talk about gay events in London without mentioning its world-renowned summer Pride event. More than 600,000 people attended the last event. This year’s event aims to be even bigger, with organizers saying they’ll have a larger parade and an even more massive event with festivities and performances in Trafalgar Square afterwards. There’ll be several events in the weeks leading up to the big day, so get there early and enjoy yourself.
